Confusion with java fern

After looking for awhile, I recently found some Java fern. When I unrolled the sponge around it, the leaves were bare without any rhizomes. Will the leaf reestablish on driftwood and wow would I tie down a leaf stem? I also made a stupid error; I was picking some egg patches off the underside of the leaves and accidently picked off little plantets :confused: Will more grow?
 
Are the roots anywhere on them? Mine don't really have a rhizome. Instead its just a clump of roots. The plant should grow more plantlets so don't worry about the one falling off but you can tie the little one to the driftwood too. I use sewing tread to tie my java fern to the driftwood. You can cut it off when it becomes established or just leave it.
 
Usually the plantlets dont have a rhizome, but only a few roots.
 
most mature java fers will have a rhizome ..it could have been trimmed way back tho and may be a nub.. the plantlets have hairs that look like roots. on close inspection even the larger plantlets show a rhizome of some sort.
not to worry tho..mine shed plantlets all the time I just let them float around..they eventy all form a rhizome and sink.

i have a ton of java fern. ;)
 
I didnt use java fern in my 80gal, with enough light and nutrients it almost becomes a pest, hehe. I think in my 60gal I have to remove atleast 1"+ 15-20 plantlets from my filter intakes every weekend.
 
If you have some cracks or splits in the wood you can try to wedge one in there. If you have a small hole you can try to stick one in. The best growing Java fern I have now is growing on a small rock I tied it to. I've used weights to clamp a bunch together and stuffed it into a pocket on a piece of driftwood. I have a bunch tied to a chop stick just so I can move it around the tank to fill empty spots when I trim plants. There are so many ways to use this plant.

hehe, i have some tied to small pieces of pvc pipe which I can then move around as well.
