I think my poor betta is constipated. He started to not eat as much, and he just hid under some rocks. His belly is swollen and he is not acting like himself at all! I have not fed him for almost a week! I put him in his own bowl and he will not eat peas or algae tablets. I get him baths in espsom salt, but nothing has worked. The swolleness has gone down a little, but not much. What can I do?!

Thanks!

Hhhmm.....do his scales stick out...sort of like a pinecone effect ? If they are that wouldn't be good.

If they aren't , just keep his water good and clean...add a bit extra aquarium salt and keep offering the cooked frozen pea, skin removed. Warmer water should help some too...around 80F at least.

Yes.. that would be Dropsy
the only form of it that is treatable is the bacterial form wich would require anti-biotics..

this is the constipation treatment.. I would feed the par-boiled skinned pea's untill it eats.. that is if it isnt showing signs of dropsy..

No, his scales are not sticking out at all. Should I keep him in his own bowl, or should I put him back into his tank??

Couple drops of ex-lax should do the trick no?

A simple way to help with constipation is epsom salt. You can buy it at a pharmacy and it is normally fairly cheap. Add 1 tsp per gallon of water. Don't use NaCl or aquarium salt for this instance as it can have the reverse affect of dehydrating the fish. Epsom salt is Magnisium Sulphate and works well as a laxative. I know for my fish they won't touch peas, especially if they are already constipated and they don't want to eat.
