converting from a community tank to breeding tank

I have been debating what to do with my 2nd 20g tank I got from my brother. While I am currently doing a fishless cycle for a community tank setup, I have also considered using it as a breeding tank in the future as I have already discovered fry in my nearly established 20g tank (danio fry) . I currently have gravel in my new tank. If i wish to convert the tank to a breeding tank in the future ,what do I need to do. Remove the gravel? Cover the gravel? Any other considerations? Any advice would be helpful :)

It would all depend on what you're breeding. Breeding danios is a breeze, as you've seen. Personally I'd just use a divider, like some sort of mesh too small for the parents to go through, with NO gravel. Keep the parents on the top, let the eggs drop to the bottom.

Cichlids are the most fun to breed, IMO, and most aren't hard. A bare-bottom or sandy-bottom (an inch or two) with a few flat slate rocks and a flowerpot "cave" to breed in, and viola. Kribs, convicts, angels, salvini, you name it, it's a hoot. Be ready to move the parents to another tank to let the babies grow out.

thanks for the replys. I haven't made up my mind, but sometime down the line I would like to try to breed my swordtails. Maybe when I build my expertise.

about breeding

i have an oscar pair that i think is trying to breed right now, i keep hearing that they will lay eggs on a flat rock (slate) which i currently have in my 75 gallon tank, at the top of the water and in side my fake plant there are little eggs everywhere with some discolored milky ligquid, is that fry? :help:
