i'm trying to figure out how to convert a dresser into a 55gallon stand.

the stand fits on top of it, so the only thing i'm really concerned about is support.

anybody else done this and have any tips?

if this works out it'll be WAY cheaper than buying a new stand. i paid $15 for this dresser at a yard sale.

yup. i fitted a steel frame inside it and sanded the top perfectly flat to prevent the weight of the tank smashing the glass because of fluctuations in the wood.

well the walls of the dresser are made out of the same stuff that my store bought stand is made from. that mdf stuff (is that what it's called?) same thickness too (about an inch)
in taking apart the dresser the only noticeable difference is that the dresser has an open bottom, which i'm sure would keep it from being stable. my assumption is that the center of the dresser is the weakest part, being furthest away from the corners, which would be the sturdiest.

my initial plan is to put support beams in each corner, then a thick supportive wall in the center (between where the drawers would go)
then, enclose the bottom.i may add some cross beams in a few places too.

well generally they arent made to carry the weight (in terms of what they are made out of, what glues were used etc). If you are set on it because of the looks then use the dresser as an outer "coat" for a more sturdy frame inside.

However... if you do a good job with your ideas... it might work. I'd add extra legs inside and certainly add the middle wall.

If you are really intent on this then go for it but be very cautious. I have converted a coffee table with a leg at each end to accomodate a 30Gal so its not impossible... just be careful and... the more you put into it the less chance of a catastrophe.
