I am planning on trying my hand at Discus; but I don't want the risk and mess of live worms. What alternatives are useable and how do you train them to eat flake foods?

most tank bred discus till eat flak.
a discus' diet is important, they need more meats and some flake and some worms. HLLE is common in a discus with a poor diet.
to get mine to eat flake i starved them for 2 weeks. i would put one pinch of flake in the tank the same way that i woulf feed them the worms or heart. if you are not ready to put forth all of these efforts i would not recommend discus to you.

cooley do yours eat frozen worms? I'm wondering if they are as good as live. The only problem I see with live worms is the risk of diseases.

frozen:
beefheart
bloodworms
krill
hamburger
dry:
flake
algae wafers
pellets
Live:
glassworms
bloodworms
blackworms
earthworms
ghost shrimp
guppy fry

i just feed them with one another. if they like beefheart(and they all do) give them a little beefheart, then give them a little algae wafers, small amounts and 3-4servings per feeding switching like i said they will eat it all and recognize it as food. if you have your fish's trust and theywill eat from you rhand then just serve small amounts and get their attention with the small amounts of the better of the two.

I'd be curious ...I have discus but never feed them beefheart.. I do feed them discus pellets and a mix of worms(blood) and shrimp(brine-enriched and mysis)
discus NEED beefheart or other high protein foods. and lots of em. i always made my own mix, if i couldnt get a heart soon enough i would just get some lean burger...
mix burger with a little cracker to make it sticky. put some flake and garlic in there. good to go
