Use RO water and you shouldn't need prime. My LFS has it for $0.25 a gallon. It's much better for the tank and reasonable for small tankers like us.

if youre willing to feed them often there are non-photosynthetic corals
when you mix water make sure you add salt to the full volume of water or else all your alk and ca will fall out of solution.
forget the hydrometer, get a refractometer.
