I have a 75G fw tank that I would like to convert to sw. Current filtration is with 2 300 Aquaclear filters. Can these be used for marine? I was reading that the current light would be sufficient for some live rock and fish but not for corals etc. I would like to have a fairly large amount of rock say about 125lbs and a dsb of about 4 inches of fine live sand. I think this may be okay for the biological needs. I am not sure about the necessity of a protein skimmer as I will mostly have fish and very very few corals. Any help here would be appreciated. My other option is going to a 24G nanocube and starting from scratch?

There are certainly people who use HOB filters plus live rock successfully for marine tanks. I would use the Aquaclears for circulation only, without media, because the media tend to trap debris which breaks down and increases nitrate and phosphate, but don't feel all that strongly. A skimmer would be helpful, regardless of whether you go with corals or not, but is not a necessity. You can also save money by using playsand and seeding it with live sand.

Thanks for the input. I have been reading you info on the new set up thread and have found it immensely helpful. I am leaning to a Aqua C Remora skimmer and improved lighting. I will need about 50 lbs of play sand and 50 lbs of live sand? the tank measures 48 x 18 x 21. As to rock is 20- 30 lbs of base rock and another 50 lbs of live rock sufficient for biological filtration? the live rock and live sand to be added after cycling? As for the Aqua clears are they sufficient for water movement? I read somewhere to use activated charcoal in them ? Any ideas. I am also buying the book The New Marine Aquarium for research purposes........Now if I can just figure out how to get the existing fw fish back to the LFS.......
