The best way to remove salt deposits is with fresh water. Preferably 120F or so (not boiling unless you enjoy a cracked tank). Using a razor blade and a plastic pot scrubber can help the process along.
Any advice on resealing the tank? Do I take off all silicon at once, or do one corner at once? When it's removed, how do I keep the panes together until I reseal? After resealing, I clean the surface with alcohol, or acetone?
You need to take off all the silicone at once, new silicone will not stick to old silicone. The panes will be kept together by the rims and the little amount of silicone there is in between the panels. I resealed a 30 gallon tank perfectly about 2 months ago, there is a link in my signature showing a step by step process.
Ok. The only problem is the tank was customized with the internal overflow, and a variety of other things... mainly, about 3 inches of the top were ruined by the addition of a rim and internal ballasts which are no longer functional. It'd be very difficult to replace ALL the silicon in the tank as there are MANY edges... I'd count at least... a lot.
Also... any tricks to guarantee a good seal the first time? As I said, it's a rather large tank and I have nowhere to put it and test it other than where it is.
