I recently got a great deal(130.00 for tank,stand, hood, and a sump) on a used 75 gallon old reef tank. Now it would be great if I wanted to do saltwater since its predrilled and came with a sump but I want fresh water. So any advice on cleaning it out? Also any advice on plugging up the predrilled holes. Thinking I might just be able to cap em with some plumbing supplies.

I'd personally use the sump and have it as the equipment centre (heater filter etc.) and then the main tank can be used as display tank. Also with a sump you are increasing the overall volume of water and hence your stocking density can increase.

How dirty is it? Either vinegar, oxy, or water should deal with salt creep. For the rest, just give it a good rinsing. Any marine critters that are still around shouldn't survive the osmotic shock.

You can hide your heaters, pumps and you wont have any unsightly filters to clutter up the main tank, plus as Charlie said it will increase your total water volume which is a good thing. As for cleaning I will say the same as the others, viniger,oxy, plus add that some good old fashioned elbow grease and a soft cloth and fresh water will do wonders
Make that three in support for keeping the sump! Sumps a re great since you can hide your filtration and heating there leaving the tank itself more open and visually unobstructed.

I was thinking about useing the sump but i'm deffinatly getting rid of the pre drilled holes. The tubeing comeing from the bottom of the tank looks realy bad. My only concern is I don't know how to setup a sump. I have only ever had freshwater. Anyone have any link on setting up and useing a sump?
