Convict and Firemouth just spawned (pictures)

Convict and Firemouth just spawned (pictures)(update w/ pics)

Update: The fry hatched 3 or 4 days ago I believe, and now they just learned how to float/swim, so I can actually post some pictures of them now.

The parents again: Female Convict / Male Firemouth right before eggs hatched.

Fry:
Why hello there.

I can't stand that flash.

Anyways, ill probably wait a day or 2 before I transport them into a fry cage. The father Firemouth is stuck at the other side of the tank, the mother Convict wont let him anywhere near the floating fry.

If anyone has any advice on when I should put them in the cage and how, that would be great. I planned to wait a couple more days and maybe use a siphon hose to transport the fry into the fry cages. Thanks!

please do not disperse the fry. you might get offers on here (like in this thread), but you need to do your best to keep the fry to yourself. dispersing them amongst other hobbyists gives them a chance to taint the gene pool. the chances are slim, but hybrids like these that have been passed around are the reason that there are "assorted african cichlid" tanks in every LFS, and nobody really knows what is in them besides that they are "assorted african cichlids".

hybrid cichlids are interesting to look at, but not to touch. do NOT give them to anyone else.

Another Update

UPDATE JUNE 22

Well im trying to keep this journal going on my first attempt at trying to raise the fry. They're Convict/Firemouth hybrid fry that are around 2 weeks old now. They're in a fry cage now in a separate tank from the parents. I just basically feed them ground up flake food and things are going very well for my first attempt.

This first picture is before I put them in the fry cage. As you can see the fry stay below the convict mother, and at this point they were still in my main tank being herded around while the mother would attack all my other fish in site.

These next pictures are the fry now at 2 weeks in the fry cage in a separate tank away from the mother.

No this picture isn't a repeat, my firemouth/convict spawned yet again yesterday! (check out the eggs) I swear my firemouth/convict spawn about every 3 or 4 weeks.

They fry seem to be able to swim pretty well now in the fry cage. Most of them are already developing some sort of striped pattern and their dorsal and tail fins are now more prominent then ever.

Well anyways, I promised id keep you guys updated with pictures of how my hybrid fry are doing and ill continue to update as time goes on. Take a look at the other pages for earlier photos! Thanks for looking!

I'm subscribed! Very interested to see the fry as they grow up! Two pretty fish.

Hybrids get weeeeird. Be careful with them, for sure. Pretty interesting though, I must say. +1 for going for it.

Nice update. Just be sure to keep that breeder box clean daily....looks like a fair amount of food on the bottom of it.

You're absolutely right. Had to clean it out yesterday. Even lost a few to the siphon.

Just been feeding them ground up flake food. Right now there's around ~30. Ill take more pictures once they look more developed. Thanks everyone!
