Convict and Firemouth just spawned (pictures)

Not to dig up an old post, but, how are the fry doing? Just curious.

Sorry guys, i've been slacking on the pictures. I dont want to post new screenshots of the fry when they still look the same, so I decided to let some time go by.

But anyways, back to the hybrids. Incase you missed it, these are Firemouth (male) / Convict (female) hybrids. I ended up giving away 10 of them to my brother for his tank so im down to around ~20 or so left. Surprisingly, I haven't lost any of the fry since the move to the new tank from the fry cage.

Anyways, here's the pictures. Excuse the multicolored gravel, it was the only stuff we had laying around :) These Fry are around ~2 months old now.

So what do you guys think? Are they taking more after the male Firemouth or the female Convict?

I think they are taking more after the convict mother. But, I see the firemouth influence though. It's tough to say now, for sure, but they will definately be cool looking. Maybe they will look like cons, but with more elongated bodies. I was looking at pictures on other hybrids and there is a lot of variation. Here are some;

I Agree, so far at 2 months old they have the markings from the Convict mother, but yes it seems as though their bodies are more elongated like Firemouth.

These pictures are interesting.

In the first one, it looks like its more Firemouth influence. The shape of the body and the reddish underneath is more Firemouth, but the color scheme seems to be more convict, which made the red underbelly a more burgundy color.

The second picture is just amazing. The gold tinge on top looks great. You can see the convict characteristic with the large hump on its forehead which is indicative of a male in Convicts. But I also see some Firemouth influence with the 'false eyes' on the gills, which convicts lack.

The third picture looks the most Convict'ish of the 3 pictures. The body is a bit different, and the pectoral fins are more straight than a convicts. The color scheme seems to be more male convict'ish, because female convicts have a bit more color to them. Is that 3rd picture a hybrid w/ a Firemouth as well? Because the only difference I see is a little bit of a different body shape than a normal convict.

Very cool pictures. I hope mine turn out to be more like the gold looking one. I also saw pictures of hybrid firemouth/convicts, and the female were almost completely silver.

Yes, as far as I know, it is a one. I see the fire mouth in the head area. I think it looks a lot like pic #1 one. That's the thing with hybrids I suppose! You never know what you are going to get.

I have said it before and I will say it again, please do not disperse these fish. Cute as they might be, they are hybrids and should be treated as such. If you have not done so already please make sure your brother fully understands the risks of spreading these fish.

Thank you!

Thanks. Dont worry, my brother is keeping them isolated in a spare tank. None of them will reach the public, I promise. :) On another note, he mentioned one already died and he's only had them a few days. I have a feeling the whole batch I gave him will die off because hes not that great at keeping fish and they're still so young, but he insisted on wanting some now since hes anxious of putting fish in his empty tank.

I know I will end up keeping about 4 or 5 for myself, going to try to pick out the nicest looking ones just for a tank dedicated to the Firemouth/Convict hybrids. As for the rest, im not sure what im going to do with them. I have a 40g tank with just a single Jack Dempsey in it, maybe ill feed the ones I can't keep to him. If anyone has any ideas on how to dispose of the ones that I cant keep, let me know.

Well, if I had a spare tank I would love some, they are very nice looking. Sadly, I don't right now... although, if they were small enough for a 20gal I would put them in my tackytank... but Convicts need larger tanks, correct? If you can't keep them then feeding them to other fish would probably be best. Just make sure they don't get the chance to breed amongst themselves, while that would be interesting to see the decedents it would also result it a LOT more fry :)

At the size the fry are at now, a 20g would be just fine, and for a long time. But eventually yea, as they get larger, I wouldn't keep more than 2 of these full grown hybrids in a 20g, and that would be pushing it. Right now, I have ~20 of the fry in a 20g long, but as I pick out the ones I want and as they get larger, ill start transporting them in my spare tank. I have a 55gallon tank that's empty right now, and I plan on putting 4 or 5 of the full grown hybrids in there and see what happens. Just a tank dedicated to the hybrids.
