Hi All,
I added a thread about a week ago about my pair of convicts laying eggs and then the eggs hatch and then I see nothing again. I was told by many that the babies are there not to worrie. Well again there are no babies. I pulled everything from the tank this morning including the log that that the female lays her eggs on. There is nothing at all. What is happening. Why are they eating the babies? I'm so bummed this is the third time in a row she's laid eggs and I see the eggs turn into little swimmers and then boom they are all gone. Any suggestions?:wall:

Hmmm... well thats strange. From what I know convicts are usually good parents. Well at my school, we have extensive amounts of convicts breeding and if we have a pair that are known for not being good parents, we remove the item that the eggs were laid on (eggs and all) and put it in another tank for rearing. This is the only solution I could think of. Good luck.

in your tank do you have sorta big substrate like pebbles if you do the babys might have fallen through the cracks. this happened to me the first time my cons spawned. you may not see them again. the solution to this problem for me was to rearange the tank, especially where the eggs were laid on, then add in a pot, just make sure the pot is non toxic and wash it before you put it into your tank. i added in a cheap $1 ceramic pot i found at my dollar store. i just made sure it wasnt glazed and it was nontoxic and big enough for my spawning pair to go into. for me 2nd times the charm. good luck

While convicts are good parents most of the time, yours could just be bad parents.

What type of filtration do you use? They could be getting sucked into the filter.

What else is in the tank with them? If not just the pair, something else could be eating them.

I'd check your filter pads. Get a sponge for the intake.

I checked the filtration pad and nothing there. I have no other fish in the tank. Tonight I put in 2 pieces of slate and took out the log she was laying eggs in before. I'm hoping she'll lay on the slate so I can see more this time. I'll keep you posted. If they eat them again, I'll have to try a different pair.

I took the log out that she laid the eggs in before and put slate in the tank. she is getting ready to lay eggs again as she is busy moving pebbles. She doesn't seem interested in laying on the slate which is what I thought she would do. She seems more interested in laying her eggs in the pebbles. We will see what happens. I'll keep you updated. Thank you for all your suggestions.

Convicts like a horizontal surface, not vertical, so if the slate is leaning against the side of the aquarium like you see in angelfish setups they probably won't use it. I've had them lay on the side of the glass, though, so it's not impossible. They just prefer flat horizontal. Pick up a couple of those larger flat stones they use for landscaping. They are about 2.5-3" across and smooth. They love those.
