My pair of convicts dug a pit today. my female has red on her side and her belly is bulging. how long until they have babies?

Nobody knows exactly. They sometimes dig even when not mating. They like to spawn in clay flower pots very much. If you put one in, make sure its clean.

Watch them closely and you will know what type of things they do when they get ready to lay the eggs and how long it takes for them to hatch. It really depends on the fish and its hard to say without some pictures.

It is very likely that they are spawning though. It doesn't take much to get them in the mood.

When my pair starts moving LOTS of rocks, they will lay eggs within a couple of days. Mine remove the rocks all the way down to the glass.
I have never noticed any buldging of the females belly. Once the eggs are layed, one parent will 99.9% of the time stay with them. Be advised that depending on the structure on which they lay their eggs, you may not see them unless you physically remove the object. They will take turns eating.

Here are some pics of my pair. These pics were taken just after eggs were laid. Notice how they are well aware of my presence and followed me to both entrances to their cave. Notice how one will stay in the cave and the other will guard the entrance. Also noted is how far they have removed the gravel from around the cave. The cave USED to sit on TOP of about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of gravel. They have moved the gravel from all around it and the entire cave is nearly sitting on the bare glass.
I once had to physically remove a piece of rock from the larger male Cons mouth. It was stuck there for nearly 3 days. A steady hand and a paper clip fashioned into a fish hook helped me remove it.
Sorry I couldnt get any more clearer pictures, but when protecting eggs or fry, they are hard to shoot.
