I have only one convict cichlid in my tank. I came home from work today and she is in the middle of laying eggs. Why do females lay eggs if there is no male to fertilize them?
I had to look at the eggs for a few minutes before believing they were eggs. This is amazing :D

happens all the time, for example my female Bujurquina vittata always does this every month or so, even though there is nothing resembling a male around.

This is one of the factors that make convicts probably the easiest cichlid to breed. Not all cichlids will lay eggs if there is no male, but convicts are definately not a part of this group. Therefore, if there is a male and female convict, you WILL have more.
