can somebody please help me? i'm an expierienced fish keeper. i'm keeping oscars, pacus, and african cichlids. had them for about 3 years. i have a 30 gallon fish tank and its set up and cycled. i want some convict cichlids. i was wondering if i should get one male and 5 feamales or 6 feamales. i'm moving them to a 55 gallon when they get bigger. i dont just want one fish i want a couple of them (mainly the convicts). could anyone please give me some advice on what to do. if the convicts wont work then please list some other fish (cichlids) that i could keep. thank you. :)

Generally cons form pairs, not harrums. A matting pair will team up and beat the crap out of the other females. You could do the pair and keep them in the 30(bare minimum) But becarefull, rabbits have nothing on these guys when it comes to breeding.

thanks for the info. do you know any other cichlids that i could keep in a 30 gal for now? (about five or four cichlids).

a 30 gallon tank is too small for African cichlids from Lake Malawi. many of the Lamprologus species from Lake Tanganyika on the other hand would do well, are harem spawners, and small enough for a thirty given the proper environment.

There are also other species of the same genus (spilurum, septemfaciatus, etc.) that fare better in a small group, they are not as aggressive. I have also witnessed my males spawning (spilurum, sajica, and centrarchus) with more than one female at a time on different ends of the tank. After a while you may have different generations cohabitating together in the same tank, as parents they are tenatious.

i just got a 55 gallon cycled. i have a 8 inch tiger oscar that i'm putting in it and i'm putting a 4 inch albino tiger oscar in it. i'll also put that pleco that i was talking about earlier in. i'm giving it to my dad for christmas. next i'll give him a 100 gallon. do you hink there will be any problems with this tank?

i had a drream last night ... in it, people actually researched about fish and learned how to care for them, how big they grew, what size tank they needed and how they get along with other fish. they learned that oscars grow to over a foot ... as in 12-13 inches or more and that one of them needs about 75 gallons to thrive. they knew, as "EXPERIENCED FISH KEEPERS" that you cannot keep 6-7 convict cichlids in a thirty gallon tank. they learned that two oscars need about 120 gallons. then i woke up and was terribly disappointed.

in my next dream i hope i don't find out that
i'm keeping oscars, pacus, and african cichlids.
that these fish are all in the same tank and it's 30 gallons. nah, an "EXPERIENCED FISHKEEPER" would know that pacu's sgrow to over two feet.
