Well after thinking that I had two females because of all the failed breeding attempts, this batch of eggs finally hatched yesterday. I am so excited :D :D :D When I was looking at the eggs, that were in an upturned hollowed out piece of wood, with a flashlight, I noticed that they were wiggling. Mom and Dad are very good parents and have moved the fry to a pot. Would it be safe for me to do a waterchange today if I keep all the activity at the opposite side of the tank? This is so awesome.

:D Congradulations :D
I would not recommend the water change, wait until they are no longer wigglers or you may lose some to the siphon even with attempts not to.
When you do do the water change, stare into the bucket for a while before ditchin the old water to make sure non got sucked up, I once sucked up two of them. :sad

If you would normally do a water change then do it. Good normal water changes got them to breed then why stop now? I've done water changes on every saturday even with egg/wigglers/fry just watch where you are cleaning and stay away from the wigglers. N8

I havn't had any problems with mine. I need to find homes for mine soon tho. they are all in a 30 gallon tall tank. just the bunch of babies, 1 pleco and the parents. the parents attack the sucky thingy when I put it in the water its funny

yeah, I want to make sure they have clean water. Also should I put something over the uptake tube of my filter so that when they are free swimming they don't get sucked up?. How old are the fry when they are able to eat flake food?

update

Well I woke up this morning and the fry were gone. I knew the fry had to be somewhere in the tank because the parents weren't trying to kill each other. Came back later and they were in the pot again. They are starting to hop around now and Mom and Dad are very busy. They placed some rocks in the pot probably to make it harder for the fry to hop out. Everything is going well so far.

lol, yer mine were nice feeder fish, im sure youll feel the same in a few weeks :P

More Convicts

:dance Yea, My convicts hatched about a month ago. I got a 55 gallon tank and a million babies. They are eating flaked food. I have three sets of parents in my tank and 2 Magnum filters. I do not change my tank but once every six months. In about a week or so I'm going to take some of the babies out and give them away. The are about a half inch long and old enough to go to another home. I really enjoy my babies too. The other parents have fry too. I got a real breeding farm on my hands... :D

The fry are a little over a week old now and the parents have started taking them on little field trips around the tank. I'm a little concerned because there is another female jelly bean cichlid in there and I'm afraid she will eat them all when they are swimming around. This female has been trying to get the new daddy to mate with her as well. The parents are doing a good job keeping her away though. I have another male convict but he is a little on the small side and can't handle being chased by the parents. I had to remove him from the tank so he can grow a bit more. It's so funny watching the fry swimming after their parents. Back and forth back and forth.
