So here's the thing, I currently have a pair of convicts and nothing else in my 50g (12.5"x48").. Could I possibly add a pair of firemouths or another pair of convicts? Is there anything else I could add?

The problem with keeping a pair of convicts is that they will severely harass other fish once they breed. You could try some dithers such as giant danios but I wouldn't raise my hopes they'll last if the cons catch up with them.

give your convicts about 2 more hours and you should have fry lol. Once they breed just leave the babies in the tank and you'll have more fish!

I think you would be fine with a tank that size if you used the eggcrate method and sectioned it off into two different sides.

i wouldnt buy a new tank, just add the 2 firemouths , but lay off more conivicts

Yeah Cons will tear up firemouths, I learned that one the hard way not to long ago and it led to euthanization. Convicts are happier by themselves, or at least mine is.

I've been using feeder guppies as dither fish and they seem to work real well. I have one male Con in a 30 gal with a pictus cat and add feeder guppies when necessary. The pictus eats em at night but the Convict seems happy just terrorizing them. He doesn't chase em or attack em, he'll just let em know he's there. So at least from my point I would say its prolly safe to put in some fast, small, topwater fish like zebra danios, something small enough to not make them feel threatened but fast enough to get their attention and keep them active.
