I have a pair of black convict cichlids in my 75 gallon. I was wondering if i could keep them in the 10 gallon for breeding and move them back to the 75 after they have babies.

Most people say you shouldn't put them in a ten gallon tank and I support that. the convicts have to find caves or shelter to lay their eggs and i don't think ten gallons is big enough. Ten gallons wasn't big enough for my hospital tank for my female convict. Get at least a twenty gallon if you want to breed them. Good luck.

Chaos. I have bred Convicts happily in a 20g tank. I xfer their fry to a 10g to raise for feeders.

A 20g with a rock or clay pot will provide you a successful breeding ground.

A 10g would be too small, but would probably end the same result knowing Convcits and their breeding capabilities.

If you are still talking about the 20 tall you mentioned earlier, that tank is no different from a 10 as far as the convicts are concerned. Its footprint is exactly the same as that of a 10 gallon tank, and the floorspace/surface area are what are important in determining what fish you can keep in a given tank.

a 20 tall would have to be 24 inches tall if it had exactly the same foot print as a 10 gallon.

20 talls are only 16 inches tall so the foot print can't be exactly the same.

the statement that the foot print of the 20 tall is the same as a 10 used to back up the fact that a 20 tall is not enough room for a pair of convicts is false but that doesn't change the fact that the 20 tall isn't enough room for a pair of convicts.

how large are the convicts??? I would say yes on the 10 gallon for the pair to lay eggs and then remove them. If they are under 4" then they will be fine. Just do water changes every few days till they lay eggs and then you can remove the parents when ever you want.
