convicts population boom!!!!!

i have a few breeding pairs of convicts, one tank i have has 2, and they are bredding all the time, i never keep the fry as they are eaten up by all my other fish in the tanks, most of them are blue acaras, but other convicts will eat the fry too, i have only been able to kept about 6-10 convicts this way from gettin eaten as i dont care anymore and do not care for the convicts, they jsut breed with is nice, but as soon as the fry hatch i dont feed any food for about 2 days and then all the fry are gone.

Con size ranges from 4" - 2"
blue acara size is 6" - 2"

I've never had any luck with getting convicts to spawn. I've had males and females before and had to separate them because they were killing each other (usually the male killing the female). What exactly did you do?

um its not really hard both the male and female have to be somewhere around the same size. add water, and some caves, and the temp stays at 80 and in a few days u will see the breeding tubes and then they will have bajillions of babies. a good diet helps.

its always been easy for me too, i dont even really want them to breed but they do, another way to keep them from killing each other is tyo put up a lot of plants and/or decor so that it is hard for one fish to see the other in the tank, line of sight needs to be blocked from fish to fish and then they wont be as aggressive, you can also put in target fish, like fast moving fish, like giant danios are my fav, the cons will chase the danios instead of the female.

Sorry for hijacking another thread but my ? sorta fits.

My female convict layed her eggs before I moved her to the "love shack" tank so I moved her and the eggs probably 2 days after she laid. Now she is picking on the male convict. Is this normal? Do they have to be in a tank together WHILE she is laying the eggs or can he fertilize the eggs after they've been moved such as I have done?

im sure he can fertilize the eggs at almsot any time, but in the normal courting procedure i think they would have to be in the same tank to "talk" to each other, if the male is in a different tank, he might not want to fertilize her egs, because he does not know her, if u know what im sayin.

This may sound cruel because it is but maybe i should get cons so that i never run out of feeders for my Oscars and Flowerhorn...let the bashing begin. Honestly, what do people do with cons that breed like guppies? What do people do with guppies that over populate?...turn them into feeders.

hey 808, Ive been doing that for a while know, its healthier and safer than store bought goldfish. so dont feel bad. :joke:

i used to breed guppies and platys to use as feeders, but most of them died, so i moved up to cons, and they breed a lot, in my brothers tank, a pink con, just laid a ton of eggs on a rock wall
