I am going to this super awesome fish store in Indiana called the Reef tomorrow (specializes in fish not just marine) and i was wondering which cichlid i should get. I understand that the only africans i can keep are shelldwellers like lamprologus brevis. I also understand i couldnt keep anything else with cons or keyholes. Apistos would be nice as well. What is evryone elses opinion?
Which fish has more personality?

Tank size and what other fish you want will come into play. I, like Lupin, would always go for the apistos...

I'll go with the apistos too. IME, every time I had a couple convicts I ended up with too many convicts.....very prolific breeders they are!

20 long so naturally it is probably better to go with apistos or shellies, but i was wondering about keyholes.

while technically not a dwarf..keyholes are relatively small..usually 3.5"-4"
I have some and none have hit 4" they are larger than rams and pretty hardy.
they are timid but mine swim to greet me at feeding time..other than that you may not see them much..they do like structure and caves. and will spend time there.
I have one that likes to 'collect' rocks and piles them up on a decorative castle in one tank.
they will move small rocks around..like they are decorating the tank..but they don't seem to bother the plants.

they are not the most colorful or active cichlid..but i like to think of them as the teddy beqars of the tank.

how about steatocranus casuarius? I'm looking for some myself. but out of the ones you listed, i would chose shellies

What did you wind up getting? I would have went for the apistos myself.
