Any good biotopes besides African biotopes that look good for a 40 breeder I was thinking South Americans or Asian

South american and Asian sound cool. You could also do a west african biotope too.

I would do a few types of tetra with a dwarf cichlid or two, maybe a school of corydoras.

Skip discus, a 40 is too small.

But a blackwater SA biotope would do nicely.

A shoal of tetras, a pair of apistogramma, and a shoal of corydoras would work out well, but be sure to check your GH and the GH of the fish you're looking to keep. Most SA fish need GH under 215ppm, or even lower than 170ppm, and over time if kept in the wrong water can be weaker to problems and not live as long as they could.

I like NooldeCats idea. Or go Asian with a bunch small loaches (not clowns or yoyos), several rasboras (1 of several species) & maybe a pair of honey gouramis or a pearl gourami...
