Cooling the tank on a budget

Although I don't really want to spend the money on it as I should be spending it on my businesses and advertising, I think I might go ahead and get a chiller. I found a smaller one for about $300 that should do a nice job.

The room seems to get much warmer than the tank. I'm a skinny boy from Baltimore and I can handle the heat pretty good, it stays hot and humid down there in Baltimore. I was sitting here last night with no shirt on and was covered in sweat. Not sure what the room temp was. Anyways, I think this chiller would work great and hopefully not suck up too much electricity. I might wait about a month until I buy it since I don't have anything living in the tank yet (except the algae of course). My live rock is going to be shipped and I think it is way too hot out for shipping it right now. If I order the Martial Island from Premium Aquatics, I am in a 2 day ground area. It would be about $80 shipping for all my live rock and sand ground or about almost $300 for overnight. I think if I wait til about October to order it ground shipping would be ok. Am I right?

The only thing to remember about having a chiller in a smaller room is that the chiller itself will create heat as it runs, warming up the room. I've heard of many people creating a vent to allow the heat from their chiller to escape outside. I don't know how flexible your options are in terms of chiller placement and/or venting, but it's just something I thought I'd point out.

Exactly FSN it's just a heat exchanger not a heat remover. It will move the heat into any room that it's in unless it's vented outside to your basement etc.

I have actually just taken delivery of this same chiller from Smith and fosters except mine is a 1/10th hp. 46 gallon is right on the cusp so I wanted to go alittle extra. After shipping I spent $350. I will be hooking it up on Tuesday so I don't know how it works yet.

The main reason I got a chiller is because in South Florida my AC usually holds the room to 78 and the tank to 80 but if there is a hurricane and my power is out for a week or so I can run the chiller on my generator. And it is one step closer to my coral set up!

if you aren't planning on getting fish for a while maybe you could just skip the chiller this year and work on getting that LR in. it may be hard to get a clean up crew for that algae before getting the rock... this way too it'd be getting cooler out by the time you get fish and i think the snail and crabs could probably handle the heat better than fish (just a guess tho)...

That sounds good. I think I'm going to get a small black fan or 2 that clips onto the tank if I can find them online instead of the chiller which would heat up the room a lot. This may help enough. Also, will some fish do ok with temperatures getting up into the 80s? I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a Percula clown. I'd also love a hawkfish but I don't want them to eat the shrimp in there. Not sure what other fish I will get. I want fish that are peaceful and entertaining.
