I am thinking of getting my first coral. In my tank i have a puffer fish, dragon wrasse, parot fish, manderin shrimp and a blue legged hermit crab. I have live rock also.
Should i purchase a protein skimmer before i get some coral? Or firstly, are my fish compatible for coral?

thanks

Hey i'm a noobie but i'm pretty sure of this..

I was going to keep a pufferfish (hence my user name) but i decided not to because it is not reef safe. I was stubborn until the petco guy showed me so in a fish book.

agreed... puffer + corals = bad news... i had a gsp in my salt water tank. at the time i had no corals and then i decided to get a feather duster which had a tube of about 8 inches long... 2 days later the tube was less than 5 inches. so if i were you i wouldnt get any corals. but if u really want some u should relocate your puffer.

I do not want to diliver the bad news but protein skimmers are a must. I know they are not cheap, but have a look at what they pull out of the water and imagine your fish swiming in that. Another thing with them is that you need to get one that is good. There is no point of spenind the smallest ammount of money for a crap one, I know this sucks to hear, as I have been told many times before, but get the best one you can for what your money can allow. Some god brands are prism and the best of the best, Tunze. Also try to get one that is complete, hence everything is built in it, so you don't have to get an air pump to go along side with it.
