Coral lighting question.

Led lighting, on Ebay.

Here's the link to those led lights. There are two different kinds. One says grow light/aquarium lights, but the other, smaller one is the one I mean. They're both by the same company, I think. I'd hate to pass up such a deal. I bought those aquatraders T5HO lights for my planted tank, and they've worked great. No complaints. I know, I shouldn't go cheap, but more money doesn't always equal success. Has anyone used these lights? Are you keeping sps corals with them? Clams? I'd love to go led, but I don't want to find out that these lights are inneffective at keeping hard to keep corals. Thanks! :o http://pet-supplies.shop.ebay.com/i...rksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=;ed&_osacat=1281

Which hang on the back filter would you recommend, besides the 170? My dad still hasn't said yes, yet, but he allowed me to buy my second 75 gallon after the 17th of the year, last year. He could still surprise me. If nothing else, it's an interesting idea. That's the problem, moving back in with parents. You save a lot of money, but are limited to how crazy you can get with your fish hobby. I would expect to pay at least $500 on my mini-reef. I've spent quite a bit on my fish, in the last couple of years. Discus, diy lighting, upgraded to T5HO lighting, Dainichi foods, CFL lights for the twenty-nine gallon, 6 new tanks(three in storage, now), subscriptions to magazines, club dues, pumps, powerheads, filters, filter parts, bulbs, sand, fish, and a ton of other stuff. Going cheap, and attempting to diy, typically, makes my life more difficult, and more expensive in the long run. So, I figure spending a little money would probably be worth it.

I'd be a bit cautious about that fixture. I can't comment much in that I have never used LED lighting, but most available now just aren't very intense, according to various readings. There are some better constructed ones that can support corals just fine, though I don't know if this is one of them. It doesn't really give too many specifics, like the type of LEDs used. Also marketing statements like "scientifically designed," especially from an ebay seller, makes me skeptical to begin with. Just my $.02 on this one.

As far as filters go, almost any of them can be used. The main issue will be overall volume, in that the more you can get, the better, since it can be used for more algae.

Since you are starting to get into reefs, you should really get a decent light over that tank. Not just the bulbs but also the reflectors play a HUGE role in how much light gets into the tank. Tek, Ati, Aquatinics, and Ice Cap Retros are among the best. You will most likely want to upgrade some day so you should splurge when it comes to lighting, if you can.

I have a 29g but I have 1 150 watt HQI over it. I also have an AquaC Remora and it does a great job.

Doh!

Thanks, I guess I'll just have to do some more research into the subject. My dad has kind of nixed the idea of setting up another tank. For now, I'll just have to drool over your guys tanks! Thanks for the advice, though. Maybe for my birthday.
