What would a good species be for my first coral? Any recomendations? I am a bigger fan of the hard corals but know they are more difficult to take care of and require more lighting so i am going to start with soft corals. (No anemonies) any other ideas? i was looking at a Green star polyp, yellow colony polyp, pimple mushroom, yellow tree coral. And as far as LPS goes i was concidering, candycane coral, octobubble, or open green brain coral. Are these good for starters? I am only adding one at a time.

Thanks Germanman, i will post a pic when i decide which one to get and its in the tank.

tell us more of your tank. what size/fish/equiptment/lighting do you have?
the softies are a good bet, but jsut checking to make sure you will be okay

A 33 gal tank, Currently running an aquaclear70 power filter, 150 watt heater, the lighting is being upgraded, currently blue light at 70 watt. i have 29lbs of live rock no fish and a couple crabs and an asteria snail. No fish yet. I am adding powerheads on Thursday and a protein skimmer in March. i do not think i forgot anything.

how long has this tank been set up for?
and 70 watt "blue" light tells us nothing. unless there are multiple tubes, the only thing i can think of is a 70 watt halide which is not a lot for a 33 gallon tank, especially because of the depth and width of it.
what type of lighting is it? if you dont know the type, then if you say the brand and fixture type, someone can probably ID it.
i can so, however. that you will have to upgrade, IMO

the company is UL that is all i can tell you, the light came with the tank which was bought second hand. i am in the process of upgrading my lighting as mentioned. There is only one light bulb, not the double lighting with the blue and white bulbs which is what i am upgrading too. that is really all i know about my lighting. Sorry i can not tell you more!

i woudl definatly wait until you lighting is upgraded.
what type of lighting are you upgrading too? there are many types with one blue or one white or even one side blue and one side white.

I am a little undecided as to what kind of lighting a 33 gal would need. My tank is longer rather than taller which i think is good as far as lighting. I want something strong enough so that if i do decide to grow hard corals i wont have to upgrade again. The guy at my local fish shop is great and he may have some suggestions. Or any suggestion you or anyone else has would be great. I want to have the option of many different corals.

when you say hard corals, are you refering to lps such as frogspawns and brains? or sps such as acros and montis?
if you want LPS and not sps, then a few PCs would be good, t5s would be better. if youw ant sps, i would suggest MH, or at least a lot of t5s. the lps, although will do well under PCs, will do better under the stronger types like Metal Halide.
