Coralife Aqualight Mounting Brackets?

My 48" power compact 2x65W Coralife Aqualight arrived today from BigAls! What are the benefits in using the mounting brackets? The brackets suspend the fixture about 2 1/2" above the glass top. To me, the tank looks brighter with the light placed directly on the glass top. Any thoughts?

I have the same light, 2 30"(260w) on my 120g, and one 24"(65w) on my 20g. For all of them I am using the brackets. For one thing, I think the coverage will be greater-not sure if you need it and they shouldn't heat the water when raised. I know they come with fans but if you touch the glass after they're on for a couple of hours, it gets hot. So I would imagine that they hit the water as well. Other than that, no benefit.

If you don't have the glass cover, the legs should be used to prevent splashing and high humidity from corroding the fixtures. They can also be convenient for using the lights inside a custom canopy, and for tanks that are skinny enough to have the fixture cover the entire top of the tank. I have one of these in a custom canopy that holds them up about 8 inches from the uncovered surface, and another where the lights sit on the glass cover--no problems either way, no significant heating on either setup.

Thanks! I installed the mounting legs and I like the way it looks! I believe the light coverage is better and the tank top is more accessible. I also put in 6700K bulbs. Hopefully I will see some improvement with my plant growth. I still need to research the CO2 issue more.

As mentioned above, I have the same setup for lights. You mentioned that you're looking into co2. Well, I'm there. I have pressurized co2 controlled by Milwaukee controller. The bad part, I am battling hair algae now in the 120g. In the 120g I have 2.2wpg and pressurized co2 injection. In my 20g I have 3.25wpg and hardly any algea. In the 20g I am doing yeast injection. I don't think I am doing anything much different between the two tanks. I know that in the 120g I feed much more. The light could be the factor, not sure.
