Coralife Lunar Aqualight and GFI???

I run all the electrical for my aquarium through a GFI outlet (for protection against electrical shock whenever electricity is used near water). I just bought a 48" Coralife Lunar Aqualight with 4 65w Power Compact flourescent bulbs. When plugged into the GFI and turned on, the GFI pops emediately. Everything is fine when run from the outlet. Anyone had similar experiences with high wattage PC lighting (or other) and GFI outlets. Maybe the electronic balasts are doing something that the GFI doesn't like? I've tried 3 separate GFIs with the same result. It's not an overload problem, that's not what GFIs check, but rather they check if what goes "out" comes "back". If there is a descrepency, ie. a short to ground (by you standing in water), they trip. Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else has had any similar experiences with GFIs.

I'd suspect you do have a small short somewhere-I run my ballast through a GFI and it's never popped. Make sure the lights are seated properly, etc--and if you can't find an easy fix, I'd exchange it for a new one. Could be just enough of a leak to cause a problem if it came in contact with something highly conductive--like water.

Is it a plug-in GFI? Some plug-ins units can be prone to false tripping (a problem that can be solved by replacing the plug-in with a different model).

I use a plug-in GFI I purchased from Premium Aquatics, and my Coralife Lunar Aqualight never trips it.

I've tried two plug-in type GFI's and just for a check I ran an extention cord to the bathroom where there is a wired-in GFI in the wall and it tripped all three. I spoke with an electrician this morning and asked his opinion on Power Compacts and GFIs and he said that it could be something in the electronic balasts, that all house lighting (flourescents) are always seperate from the GFIs (maybe for a reason), and that the plug-in type could be more sensitive and are normally used for power-equipement outside where there is water present. Here's the weird thing...I figured it's something to do with the light, so I would plug it directly into the wall outlet on the top receptical and then plug the rest of my aquarium (pumps, heaters, etc.) into the plug-in GFI and then plug that into the lower receptical of the same outlet - it still tripped the GFI! How is that possible when the light wasn't even plugged into it! Some weird wiring/feedback going on? Probably should take the light back, but it runs fine, doesn't stink, and doesn't trip the house breaker.

I know the perminent GFI's control the entire circuit, not just what is plugged into them. So I'd say it tripping while plugged into a different outlet doesn't mean anything.. now if it was a completely different circuit, then I might be worried. Either way I'd take it back.

Thanks for the advice guys. Ran another test on it last night. The unit has two sets of 65w bulbs each with thier own power cord. One trips the GFI and the other does not. I'm going to talk to my LFS about exchanging it this morning....it was a special order hope they take care of me.

Well, my LFS ordered me another one. Will be in next week. I called Energy Savers today and they verified that it should work with a GFI and they recommend it. Also, I was moving the light to get access to the tank today, and zap! I touched a certain combination of screws on the side and got a shock! Anyway, just an update and to say thanks for the advice. Looking forward to the new one with hopes it will be ok.

Well, I got the new light in yesterday. Tested it with my GFI before setting it on the tank and wiring it in to my timers. No problems! So after putting on the little legs, setting it on the tank, plugging into my timers, and tie wrapping everything up nice and neat, I test it again. Each bank...on and off a couple of times and poof! One channel flickers, dies, and refuses to come back on. This new light has a ballast problem! I even swapped connectors on the lights to make sure that the bulbs weren't bad and they light, but plug them back into their proper plugs - and nothing. I even ran an extension cord from another outlet to bypass my timer and GFI and nothing. If you turn it on and off 20 times it may flicker once and it may turn on once, but if you turn it off, it won't come back on. Now I'm 2 for 2. My LFS is going to order me a Current USA Orbit fixture which their supplier says is a better made unit - let's hope so. I know many of you have not had any problems with your units...consider yourself lucky. Maybe Coralife has just had a run of bad parts from suppliers, making the current batch deffective. Whatever it is their QC sucks. I sent them an e-mail and asked if maybe they could plug them in and test them after they build them and before they ship them. Just wanted to pass this on for anyone searching for info. on lights. If you try it, I hope your luck is better than mine.

On a side note, the 260w fixture would have given me 2wpg, I'm thinking about using this oportunity to up the wpg to 4wpg with the 520w Orbit Extreme. At first I'll keep one bank off and try lower light plants. As my green thumb developes, I can up the wpg to 4 and try Co2. At least this way, I'm covered for whatever I decide I want to grow.
