Hi All,
It's been a while since I have posted here. (Work can really get in the way of fun!) Anyway, I have decided to get a protein skimmer for my 43 gallon corner bow tank. I have also pretty much decided on the Coralife Super Skimmer based on my research. Any final suggestions would be appreciated and if anyone has this, how is it? Is it loud or complicated? I was just curious. I need to hold the cost to under $150 but don't want a piece of crap! All my lfs sells is the Cyclone and i have heard nothing good about that one so I am going to get it on line or through ebay. Also I would be interested in a used one but if I went that route, what would I need to look for? I don't really know what wears out on these things.

ANy help would be appreciated.

i have a CLSS. it works nicely. quiet, easy to use. to adjust it, you jsut adjust a little dial. It is hard to say if it is the best skimmer there is for the money because it is the only one i have ever used. But it doesn produce some good stuff.I would suggest a larger skimmer than what it recomends however, try to get a 125 version.

I have heard nothing but good things about the CoralLife skimmers. All my LFS here try to sell me with it. Good skimming properties, not too instrusive on the tank area, and the price is fair. I have been shopping for one and so far have been undecided on whether to shell out the cash. I considered this one in the top three.

Not sure who said this thing is not obtrusive. The coral super skimmer that I am returning sticks a huge power head and a large bubble diffuser into your tank. Way too obnoxious looking. I am returning for something sleeker. Maybe ok if you have a sump tank to sink the ugly bugger in, otherwise run away.

All hang on tank venturi skimmers are "obtrusive" as you describe it. They need to have a powerhead and "bubble diffuser" (don't you mean the sponge that is on the endof the power head?), as well as a piece of airline tubing to deliver air. Hang on counter-current skimmers are pretty much the same, except you need an air pump and the airline goes inside the skimmer instead of into the powerhead. Co - current skimmers are even worse, as they need to either go in the sump or directly in the tank

Guess its time to think about a sump then. And no, I meant the diffuser box that is designed to fit in the tank on the end of the exhaust hose. It all just seems very hamfisted to me.

I would disagree with you on this one, DF. Compared to the remora and the bakpak, the corallife skimmer is a lot more obtrusive. Larger powerhead, and a large, boxy bubble trap that sits in the tank. CPR and AquaC have their bubble traps within the skimmers themselves, so all the extends into the tank are a small powerhead and the return.

The Superskimmer is cheap and effective, but much more of an eyesore than other HOB skimmers I have used. The word "hamfisted" seems like a good description.
