Corals

PC lighting is generally said to be good for tanks under 22" deep, deeper than that is when MH, VHO, or T5 HO should be considered if you plan on keeping anything but low light corals on / near the bottom.

Personally, I've found that I have a hard time keeping anything but mushrooms on the bottom of our 90g tank, which is 24" tall empty. Between the deep sand bed and the small distance I raised our PCs to allow better heat exchange, the top of our sand bed is 21.5" from the lights. The placement of corals in our tank is clearly skewed towards the mid- and upper- parts (tried some of them lower in the tank, but they didn't like it). I've become tired of how empty the bottom of our tank looks and my wife doesn't like most of the mushrooms we've seen locally (glad I talked her into the ones we already have), so I did some research and that's the biggest reason I'm building T5 HO lights into our canopy.

For your specific situation, Wrench, it all depends on what kind of corals you want to keep. Your lighting will be ok for most soft corals and many LPS. You might even get away with a SPS or two that aren't as light demanding if they are placed right in your tank. If your tank is 18" tall and you have a 4"+ sand bed, most soft corals should be fine in the lower portions of your tank in terms of lighting.

Agreed, reflectors are very important. T5 manufacturers should build their fixtures with high quality individual reflectors to begin with!!!

PC will not punch the water with intensity that is at surface the same way a T5 will. Therefore with all the other pros for T5 rather than cons the T5 would be the better choice.

I have 14 PC lamps and as bulbs need replacing, I will replace fixture with T5 instead. I may save some PC for refugium lamps. T5 are awesome on freshwater planted too.

Is it possible to upgrade a PC setup to T5 or do I need to start from scratch?

you need to start form scratch basicly since you will need a new ballast, reflectors, bulbs, endcaps, ect. it is possibly to just use the fixture of the PCs and buy a t5 retro and put that in however assuming it will fit and youll have a place to attach it

Ok so besides some LPS, what would I be able to keep under 200w of PC in an 18" deep 45g tank? What are the lighting requirements for softies and zoa's?

you would be fine with most softies and zoas.

200w pc in that tank will not be enough light for most corals. They will be stressed and reaching for the light. Look at these palys. They need more light. You could keep leathers, and mushrooms. You could also keep some zoos. It really depends on water quality and placement of corals.

honestly, though i would shoot for as high as possible, try and keep lighting a few steps above minimum so at least they will thrive as far as light is concerned; but as Mr. Firemouth said, it all depends on other factors to.

Good Luck,

What do you reccomend? Should I up the wattage or upgrade to T5's
