I have a 20 gallon tank set up complete with live plants, decent lighting, good aeration, a cave and rocks. Also there are 5 (Large type) tiger barbs in there at the moment.

I want to add cory catfish in it to clean the gravel. Knowing cories are schooling fishes, whats the minimum number I can have in it? I read 5 up is good, but is 3 or 4 enough? I love the tiger barbs and would love to add more if possible thats why im trying to keep the cory numbers minimal. I would like to hear your suggestion:
*if three cories is okay, how many more tiger barbs can i add?
*if four is minimum, how many more tigers?

**Note: no I dont plan on going to Petsmart and adding all fishes at once, I plan to add 2-3 per week.

Thanks everyone!

you will want to be careful with they tigerbarbs as they can be aggressive fish. In my opinion, i do not think they are very compatible fish my self.

Oh. So then do you have any recommendation as to what bottom feeder is compatible with tiger barbs? (ones that fit in a 20 gallon of course)

Oh and thanks for your input btw =)

Yah thats the tall version. Tiger barbs can be very aggressive. It really depends on the temperament of your specific tiger barbs. Sometimes they can get along with other fish and sometimes they will attack anything. Ive had tiger barbs attacking corys in one of my tanks before.

Im not positive but there may be some pleco that would fare well as they can defend themselves. They are like underwater ninjas.

My tiger barbs are cool with all there tank mates , think the key it numbers the more barbs the better i have 12 in my tank and they never yet got aggressive to other fish , there is even one male guppy in there and he is doing fine for last 6 months ,he was a part of my fish in cycle he was 1 of 6 just could not catch him .

so few corys might be ok but you wont know until you try

Good luck

While having more seems to usually help it will not always do the trick. I had about 6 in a tank for a few months with no problems and then when I upped the school to around 10 I started to have problems. I assume there was one or two overly aggressive barbs that I added in the second batch that began to pick off the corys. It depends on the temperament of the tiger barbs that you get sometimes. Some people get lucky, some don't.

Well I have a 10 gallon not being used, so I can set that up, just incase the cories get attacked. But back to the numbers, does 3 or 4 of them work? If so, can i add more tigers in there with them?
