Cory Cats

A friend suggested that I add some Cory Cats to play the scavenger role at the bottom of my 55 gallon aquarium. My concern is overcrowding, although I think I could stand to add at least a few more fish to what I have now. Below I list what's in my tank, but what I'd like to know is if cories are beneficial to "cleaning up" and just what type of fish they are... i.e. do they school, prefer larger groups, swim or sit or hide, etc. All advice/comments are appreciated and highly anticipated!

6 Silver Dollars (2 large, four small)
3 Giant Danios
3 Sunset Colored Platys
2 Dwarf Gouramis

Corys are great fish.
They like to be in groups. I'd say a minimum of three or four.
I have albino corys, they're always busily searching the bottom for food. When they rest, they huddle together or single file at the bottom of the tank. I'd say you wouldn't be overstocked with a small group.

While I could be completely off (do correct me someone if I am), I do believe you could add a group of 5-6 cories (depending on the type) to your tank. I'd suggest Peppered, Julii or Panda cories.

Cories are a schooling fish, and prefer to be in a group of at least three (though some argue six), they are beneficial to cleaning up, and are cute as a button to boot. They swim, rest at the bottom, sometimes hide, not to mention play tag with each other, and even dart around at the speed of light from time to time.

All in all, I absolutely adore the little buggers.

You must target feed your bottom feeders. Dont rely on some food maybe getting to the bottom or over feeding to make sure it does. I used tubifex worm cubes and a few small flat rocks for feeding my corys. Slice a sliver off the cube and moisten the sliver then apply to the rock..it'll stick like a drean then just locate it at the bottom in a few areas depending on how many fish you are feeding. They are fond of live foods as well..dont be afraid to hook them up with some. Variey and nutrition is the spice of life
