ok got two cories yesterday and the lady in the store said they were happy enough to eat the algae in the tank. Is this right. I dont want to starve the poor things!

Cories don't eat algae at all, unless maybe they are starving. Go back to the fish store, or better yet another fish store, and look for a complete sinking tablet food such as Tetramin Tropical Tablets. The cories will also eat bits of flakes that small on the bottom but need a better diet. You can also buy sinking shrimp tablets that are a great cory treat. I would suggest either feeding them the tablets 1 per cory every other day or 1 per 2 cories each day (which is what I do). You can buy these products at WalMart generally so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Oh and if you have the room I would suggest getting another cory . These guys do best in larger groups and I would say that 3 is a minimum to keep them really happy.

cory

i know cories do not eat algae - however mine are big fans of the hikari sinking algae wafers i feed my pleco - they along with my other fish for some reason can't get enough of it!!!

Have similar experiences with your case, my cories, clown and chain loaches and plecos love the Hikari Sinking algae wafers and snap at it instantly!! :)

I also feed Hikari Lionhead Sinking Pellets(meant for Goldfish though), but works the same, other than that general one will be frozen bloodworms and JBL Novo Bits Granules. :)

Yup, I second getting another cory. Three is really a minimum in my opinion. If space is an issue, maybe take those back and look for pigmy cories.

Also, if space is somewhat of an issue, stay away from emerald cories which get rather large, and get some pandas or albinos instead:)

I feed mine sinking shrimp pellets by wardley, which they ADORE:) They also like the sinking pellets made for goldfish, as mentioned. I also feed frozen bloodworms - look for Hikari's brand...they are the best! And I, too, feed algae wafers...though it seems mine prefer wardley's brand...but they still eat Hikaris. Also, you can get frozen food such as brine shrimp, spirulina mix, and other assorted kinds- mine love it:)
