Cory in Trouble! Help please.

For me at least, my lfs only sells uber-big bags of the stuff, too... so the side-of-the-road idea is nice :)

If you're in the Vancouver area, I'd be happy to give you a cup of the stuff!

my concern with picking it up off the side of the road iwould be that often pesticides are sprayed to control weeds....at least around here they do.

I'm going to get some from Petco tonight (and also a GH/KH test kit)... what should I actually do with the crushed coral? Inside of the filter, mixed with the gravel? Do I need to add it gradually? If so how much at a time and how slowy? How much should ultimately be in the tank? If it depends, what does it depend on?

Sigh I hope this works, I'm already quite attached to those cute little buggers :goldfish:(well the remaining ones)! Once again, thanks for the help!

To let water sit for better stability I got some buckets from my local home improvement center. They were 3 or 4 dollars for a 5 gallon that I then bought a lid for. If I remember right the lid was about a dollar. These look like the giant pickle buckets that you might see at a restaurant but for a very few dollars I wasn't ready to take my chances with a used one. The lids are strong enough that I can stack them 2 high and end up with 10 gallons aging in a very small footprint on my floor.
I don't worry about heating the water because I add it back in very slowly. I just set the bucket high enough to siphon it then use some air hose to siphon the water to the tank. It can take a half hour or longer to empty a 5 gallon bucket so my aquarium heater has a chance to keep up and heat the new water from room temperature to tank temperature which isn't very much of a change. To keep the hose in the bucket, I end up weighing down the end in the bucket which can even slow the flow more depending how heavy the object is that I use.

anyone with some advice on how much crushed coral to add to my tank? Or how to figure out how much to add (and how quickly)? Thanks!

Also ghjhreed that sounds like a really good idea, I will definately keep that in mind. Does your heater stay below water the whole time?

Hmmm well nevermind maybe.. I added just a small amount of the coral in the gravel (a little more than a tablespoon) when I first got it (day & a half ago)... no change the first night or morning, but since then pH has been sitting at 6.4 (instead of 6; I have been doing like 3-4 tests throughout the day). So it seems like maybe that small of an amount might be enough. Thankfully the LFS I went to had tiny bags of it so I didn't have to buy 10lbs of it. I guess I will just keep testing to see if I need to adjust the amount at all. The listless cory is looking soooooo much better, he is swimming around with the Mrs. again and being much more active. I just hope it wasn't too late, but we'll see!

Thanks again for all the help guys!

Just out of curiosity... did you end up getting a kH test? If so, what were your results? Pretty low I would guess...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get them. I went to two stores (small lfs and a petsmart) and neither had the tests. I'm going to try some other places when I have time... so for now guess I'll just keep watching the pH to make sure it doesn't start to do anything nasty again

Hi there -
Was wondering if you could look at my recent posts of today when you have a sec.
I was having such high ammonia levels, but now I wonder if it's coming from my fish. Please get back to me, I feel awful, and think I should euthanize him and wanted some of your advice to it, as you did mention it in your post. I have other fish in my tank and I am so worried now about them - Please respond, I ask of you - THX!
