Corydoras Sterbai - virgin birth?!

Funsters...the mystery deepens!

There is a new baby cory in the tank...half the size of the one I forst wrote about!

I think that this now means that I can rule out eggs/fish being accidentally introduced to the tank as an explanation for the first baby...

Also, as the first mystery baby has grown his markings have remained the same (I will post a new shot) - he does not quite look like a sterbai...

I suspect that the Sterbai and the Pepper may have been doing the wild thing while I wasn't looking...what do you think?

Here is the first baby, a month later....the new baby looks just like the old photo of this one...

Since you did not see the spawning nor any eggs, there are other ways to end up with a fry that was not born in your tanks. Normally they come in as hitchhikers. I got a darter fry, barely 1/4 of an inch in a bag of sterbais. Small fish and even eggs can also come in with plants. So it is very possible that fish came from an external source.

Its hard to tell from the pics, but your young one looks to be at least an inch? So its been in the tank a while. Fry are expert hiders as well.

HaraldShultzi is a pretty reasonable guess. Here is a link to a dozen different pics of them. http://www.nettaigyo.com/corydoras/encyc/corydoras/haraldschultzi.html

Somebody who is better versed in all the various corys might chime in with a better suggestion/ID.

TwoTankAmin - thanks.

I originally agreed with you on the hitch hiker theory. Now that there is a new, much smaller offspring that looks the same (and nothing new added to the tank for months), I don't think I can hold to that theory anymore...
