I was wondering if you got different varieties of corys, say bronze and julii for example, if they would school together. It doesn't really matter which varieties, would it work? Of course, if certain kinds only liked certain other kinds, that should be mentioned.

IME, if the adult size is similar, they will hang out together more, but not school like a single species group. If there's a drastic difference between the sizes, they tend not to school much at all.

Cories are extremely species sensitive, and can tell each other apart even better than their keepers can ! :)

For example, I have had two schools in a tank a while ago, one of 4 metae and one of 4 arcuatus, which look almost exactly alike, and they did not hang out together very much. Cories love their own kinds - I would stick to one species.

Are cories more active in a group of their own species than they are as the lonely only with other types of smaller fish?

Corys are definately more active in a group. In terms of different types I would stick to one kind to be safe. I know some people have different kinds and they hang out, but I have an albino and 2 julis that were together in a 35 gallon tank. Well I thought for the longest time that the albino was sick, it always hid, did not hang out with the other 2, was very skittish, etc. Well when I got a bigger tank I moved all 3 and added 4 green cories. The albino is a totally different fish!! He must think that they are his "type" because he is so happy now and swims all over with the other 4. I feel so guilty now that he was lonely for so long :( . the 2 julis stick to themselves, so of course I plan to buy a couple more of them too, just to make everyone happy. I just hope that the albino doesn't figure out that he is not a green cory soon!!

The albino is a green--most albino cories are green cories with a double recessive for the color. Same species, different phenotype.
