Could I add shrimp?

Last week we went to Chincoteague. While there, the kids and I went exploring along the water and caught (then released) many cute little creatures. One of them being shrimp. It got me thinking that I might enjoy adding some freshwater shrimp to one of my tanks. Would it be OK to add some shrimp to my 29g? Currently home to 3 giant danios and 9 female platies. The temp hangs around 80 (even with the heater off). 0 ammonia, 0nitrites, pH is set at 6.0, and nitrates are still a bit high--like 60ppm. I have gravel substrate, live plants (java fern, wisteria, swords), and caves. 30-50% water changes and gravel vac once a week. If I could add some shrimp, how many and what kind? What else would I need for them? Thanks.

I have a feeling the giant danios would enjoy the snack and I know that platies will try and eat the young. That being said, if there are super dense areas of moss/plants you might have some survive. I would really recommend maybe starting a planted 10g invert tank. You would not believe the difference in their behavior in a species tank. They are very very visible and active and loads of fun to keep. I would recommend starting with an "easy keeper" species like neocaridina, but your pH is on the low side. THey should adapt, but your water is more suited to caridina...maybe something like tiger shrimp (which are pretty hardy) would be a good starter shrimp for you.

also if you decided to start an invert only tank, you could always try some of the adults in with your fish to see how they do thereby protecting your initial investment.

If you do decide to mix wild caught animals with captive breed, make sure that you do an extended QT period. Wild animals are much more likely to have parasites. As a rule, you should always QT any new fauna, but it's even more critical to do it with wild animals.

Good luck!
