Could this be a problem

i've just installed a fluval 304 into my largest tank. i'm still running my old interpet duo 3 filter until the 304 has it's bacteria.

the problem is that having the outlet of the 304 above the water makes to much noise. so i've removed the end and now the outlet is below the water line. this gives me no surface movement. is this a problem?
it is a heavily planted tank, i haven't noticed any fish at surface apart from gourami but they always are anyway.

I think it will be better for a planted tank to NOT have any surface movement so the CO2 doesn't escape. I would also post this in the plants section.

You'll have a little surface movement anway just from water circulation, you just won't be breaking the surfacet tension. Just from having the water circulalate around in the tank, the surface areas are going to move as well, Just maybe not as much as usual.

The plants are going to give off oxygen during the day so no problem. And as long as you aren't overstocked and the fish aren't gasping then I see no problems.
