Counting the Cost

the Girlfriend is not very happy with me at the moment after working out i have spent $1800 on my 40G tank in the last year and a half (that doesn't include running costs or purchasing of redundant eqipment such as useless skimmers, UV's lighting upgrades that have been upgraded that is just whats in the current set up!

How do i tell her i am no where near finished and need to invest the same again to make it a bona fide reef tank?

and how do i distract her from the fact that the radiata tank probly cost $2000 in the last year!

It has kept me sane however in my first two years away from home! i have a lazy boy chair right in front of the tank and no longer watch any TV!

i was able to buy my tank from a buddy after a lucky night in Atlantic City, NJ. if you know what that is being from the UK. although, i still get the looks and stuff from my girlfriend when i go to the fish store. lucky for me we don't live together yet! :dance: hehe

Are the bills being paid? Does you and she still go out together and do stuff?

My ex-husband could never undertsant that it wasn't that he spent ~$500/month on comic books that ticked me off, but that spending money on them meant he never spent any money on me (not lots, but a movie now and then, or dinner--fun stuff for both of us to do together). Then the time to read the comic books, the time and money for the video games, etc...If it's taking away from doing stuff with her, she might have a point.

I'm with OG. If you're not spending the rent money and aren't being cheap with her, then she should probably chill. She may have a point if you have no savings and are running from bill collectors, though.

It's hardly an impulse spending spree. You have been thinking and planning for a long time to get to this point.

Besides, it keeps you off the street.

Yeah i would only have spent the money on drugs and beer, only kidding!

Yeah we still do stuff and no problems with the bills so its all good, plus she and house guests are really impressed with the half complete tank ;-)

p1mack: nice way to spend the winnings! its the european lottery tonight and it currently has rolled over 9 times making it 85 Million Pounds thats $150 Million dollars in monopoly money! I may get a ticket if i win i can get that another tank for 2 tomato clowns.

That try to put it in that perspective for her. Since my husband loves the tanks as muchas I do, it's never been a quibble for us, but we each have other hobbies that we don't share. As long as the hobbies are just that--a fun way to spend spare time without taking away from the relationship, they're good and healthy. And, there are lots of hobbies that are way more expensive that don't have the added benefit of passive enjoyment for those not involved!

Yeah, Dans, i thought it was a good way too. others wanted me to save it. yeah right! i had a tank to set up! anyway, we play the lottery when it gets big here- like we have a shot. lol would be a good way to get my custom in wall setup! although, my other hobbies would get in the way too.

I had to make a deal with my live in girlfriend

She promised not to bother me about my tank if I did not bother her about her shoe shopping. I think I came out way on top in this deal. Plus she knows I love the hobby and loves to watch my clowns. Plus I spoil her rotten.
