Covering filter intake for RCS?

I'm in the process of acclimating my shrimp now and I definitely see what you mean- they are tiny. Now I'm worried that the stocking isn't secure enough! For the filter: thanks for the recommendations, I have heard nothing but good things about the Aquaclear HOBs. I wish I had done better research the first time around, but I have definitely learned my lesson for the future.

I have no idea why all these respondents say to cover your intake? I don't cover mine and I don't have a population problem other than overpopulation. . . . . . .

Guess mine are smart enough to know better than to get too close. The adults hang out on the intake all the time without getting sucked up into the filter.

Good to hear, how bout some pics???

This is the black sponge prefilters I use on the Aquaclears:
I buy the Filter Max #3 which has adapters to fit on all sizes of the aquaclear intake tubes. The #3 is a coarser sponge so doesn't clog as easly as #1 and #2. So I use the #3 on tanks from 10G to 75G. For the Aquaclear 110's I just slide the sponge right over the intake using only the piece of clear plastic on the bottom of the sponge. They stay in place just fine.

These prefilters come with different sized plastic adapters that snap together in a couple of different configurations to fit the different sizes of Aquaclear filters.

And you can order extra sponges only (without all the plastic adapters for the filter intakes) by ordering replacement reticulated sponge #3 on this page:

Always good to keep an extra sponge prefilter on hand.

I think your shrimp must be smarter than mine- they are climbing all over the stocking covered filter intake. I definitely want to keep it covered.

I'll try to get some pics- I tried taking some this morning but I get so much light in the morning all I could see was glare. I'll try again later tonight when the sun goes down!
