Covering filter intake

I use a Duetto sponge on my intake. I just made a hole about 3/4 of the way into the sponge and slipped it onto the intake. The flow won't be reduced much at all when the sponge is clean, but once it starts getting dirty you will notice less and less waterflow.

I use half an Aquaclear 100 replacement sponge for the intake on my Aquaclear 500. It slows the water a bit which is nice, as I had too much current before.

I'd recommend using these for any planted tank, as it'll stop leaves and lots of other big chunkies from going into the filter. It'll also keep things like crabs, frogs and fish from getting sucked up :D

Just cut a + shape into where you want the intake to go. Just cram it on and turn on the filter! I squeeze mine out in the used water when I do water changes and it's nasty, but it saves me lots of grief picking plant chunks out of the main filter media.

Thanks for the advice. I used half an aquaclear sponge too and everything seems fine. Water flow isn't reduced noticeably like you guys said either. So now I just gotta wait for my cycle to complete to add an ADF. :D
