ok so i finally got my tank good and established for about a month after cycling was finished. my question is at my LFS there is a really cool cow fish i asked the store keeper about it and she was really nice.she admitted she wasnt the best person in the world for salt water and that she was the only one they but siad she was pretty sure the were ok with other fish but wasnt to hardy. and if it got scared it would release poision in the water that could kill the fish and its self.so she said since she wasnt for sure and didnt want to sell me something that was going to be a lot of trouble and i admittidly dont know a whole lot about keeping a picky eater in my tank she would hold it for me until tomorrow so i could look on the computer and just call her tomorrow and tell her if i want it or not. so any information you could tell me about would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advanced

My advice would be to start with something easier. My brother-in-law had one before he moved and it was a really enjoyable pet. However, he has many years of SW reef experience. I'm also a newbie (my tank's about 6 months old,) and I know I would not get one yet. How big is your tank? Is it live rock or something else? Do you have any other fish yet? My tank cycled for about 2 months before we could even put our cleaning crew in it. Of course at that time we we're having a great time watching all the critters in the liverock. What fish were you originally planning on getting for your tank?

Wow! I just looked at saltwaterfish.com and it says the cow fish needs a minimum of 125 gallons (and usually they seem low!) They get up to 1 foot 8 inches in length. My brother-in-law's tank was 300 gallons ... no wonder!

They also list the cow fish as difficult, but that's probably because of the toxins it releases.

Anything with the potential of wiping out the entire tank (including itself) because it gets PO'd is not a good fish for a novice.

Do some homework- Google is about as easy as it gets.

i'm so glad i remebered to look here before i left because i was on my way to get i looked at everything i could find on google but did read how big it got. theres at the store is only maybe a inch long so i didnt even think about it getting that big. we have four saltwater tanks the cow fish was going to go into mine in my room and then if it started to cause a problem with other fish it was going to go in the one in the livingroom. it is built in the wall on the other side of the tv. i think it is huge its atleast a three hundred gallon. i know that my dad has a company that comes in every week to take care of it because it was a lot more work than he thought. the other ones i take care of though. but thanks for the replys.

I keep a long horn cow fish with a snow flake eel, banded cat shar, and a few other scorpion fish. This fish was one of the most enjoyable fish i have ever had. It will reconize you as the giver of food and even spit water if the lid was open to get your attention. Mine ate whatever i put in there. I feed alot of ghost shrimp so it ate mainly ghost shrimp. Sadly after 6months it died. But it didnt nuke my tank. i couldnt find it for 2 days and finally found it floating in the back corner. Nothing else died. Maybe i was lucky.
