CP terrarium thread, continued

Dang, dude. Your plants look great, and your pics are outstanding! Nicely done on both counts.

As far as helis go, they're not as bad as they are reputed to be. From what I understand, the straight species are a little more finicky than the hybrids. They need a really airy substrate that drains well. And you definitely don't want them in standing water. I think the biggest thing is keeping the temp during the day at 80 or below. They don't do well at all with high temps. As long as they get a 10 degree or so temp drop at night, they should be fine. Those are the two biggest things I can think of. I've used both the trichoderma and ferts on them with no issues at all. Actually mine has hit a pretty good growth spurt recently. I keep meaning to put up pics, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Other than that, the lighting requirements are pretty standard.

Good luck with the intermediate set up. IME with the intermediates I have, they're really easy. Might not even really need the tank. Once I move into my house, I'm going to fix up my rack a bit more, but I don't have to do anything really special to mine.

My mom just alerted me to a full time job opening at a local green house... gonna give them a call tomorrow. =)
 
You are sooo lucky with the internship DP. I also have a 4ft N. ventrata, popped out of my 55gal tank and stop producing pitchers because I'm thinking there is no light that far up.

JB I actually think it is D. villosa, Adelae has to sharp of tips. Good luck getting the job!
 
Thanks! It's growing in the window of my room, close to my gecko terrarium, so some humidity radiates out of the open screen top. The pitcher I posted photos of is dripping with nectar from the peristome right now, and it's inflating a new pitcher. I move it outside for a few hours once a week to catch some food.

My natives are coming out of dormancy with several new leaves. The S. purpurae is developing some amazing color! Pics will go up once they put on some size.

I'm very excited for this internship. We're doing a controlled burn in the new preserve behind the facility in a few weeks. It should be very interesting to see if it works. We're trying to clear some hardwoods to increase the light and water table. Lots of repotting will be taking place soon, along with a new grow shed for the highland neps that were donated. That has a very narrow window to be done so we don't stress the plants. A possible new location of pitchers and sundews has been located in Ivor, VA. We have a lot of work to do. Hopefully the large intern staff will be able to get it all done. Not to mention about 90% of the Sarrs are in bloom on site, and it looks amazing!

I was thinking about either putting my ventrata in the window or making a new plant from a cutting out of it. Not quite sure yet. I guess I'll try the window first...
 
I don't think a cutting will harm it. It'll make up the lost height in a matter of weeks/months.

Depending on price I might buy a ventricosa or truncata if the price is right. The cephs are tempting, but expensive! Mike has a ton of these things that he's grown from seed, which takes years from what he said. I only live 15 minutes from the place, so it's easy getting there.
 
Adelae actually starts out with rounded leaves. I have pics of my baby ones somewhere, I'll have to dig them up. Not to say one is right or wrong, I guess I'm just saying the possiblity still exists. Dang, a 4 ft ventrata?! That's awesome! You should make a cutting for me too. ;) I've read that pitcher production has to do with humidity as well. I'm not too familiar with that particular plant, but something to think about.

Death Pony... the internship sounds awesome! Wish I could get into something like that. Can't wait to see more pics of your stuff and hear more about the internship. I'd love to see some pics of the place if you have any. I think my ventricosa and truncata were around 9$ plus shipping if I remember right. The ceph was more expensive, but is one of my favorites, and it's easy enough to propagate that selling a couple babies could make up for the price.
 
I have a few pics from October that I'll try to put up tomorrow. There are a lot more Neps that had me drooling. I'll definitely keep you guys updated. I'm going to be doing a few CP sculptures soon after I memorize the structures of some Sarracenias.

BTW, I won the senior award for studio art last month with my exoskeletons. Hopefully the department will still have the solo show in the fall of 2012, since the award was split between me and one other student. It would be a perfect venue to gain more public attention for these bizarre, unique plants.

JB We'll time will tell on what dew it is. The Ventrata produced its last pitcher just outside of the terrarium, so probably light and humidity is the problem. Which just being in the window might not help it that much. I'm just gonna lop off the top and start a new plant in the mean time. Any tips on doing this?

I'm going to try to make a trip to the Webb's Mill Bog here in NJ sometime this summer.
