CPD breeding temperature?

Had a couple of CPDS and over the years its down to the last two they have never bred for me in the past in all planted tanks I've had unless they ate the eggs temperature has always been between 74-78 degrees heated tank

Now I put them in the 10g tank due to downsizing and its not even heated- the room temperature goes from 60s-70s depending on the day and its winter. I see 5 small guys... i know its CPDs though. Theres even more fish in there than before with 10ish other type of rasboras and some akysis type catfish. I think 1 or two left now.


what temperature tend to trigger the spawns? I would love to get them bigger by spring so I can stick them outdoors and try a stock tub idea.

I've had them do well unheated 70-75 degrees. If you want to spawn them a 10 gallon with a tray of marbles and java moss over the marbles. Either remove the tray and suck out the eggs every week or remove the adults every 2 weeks and wait for the fry to hatch. I raised hundreds last summer by doing this. I put the fry in tubs outside and raised them from May-October. The temp isn't as important as having the spawning area where the adults cannot eat the eggs/fry.

Interesting. I'll try this method with the marbles. How fast does the fry grow into breeding condition so I can try to have a couple in the stock tubs this spring?

I'm thinking they were 8-10 months old before they were breeding size although it's hard to remember. I was selling them at 6 months to pet shops and on-line. I only had maybe a dozen adult wild caught and F1 fish. Out of those adults I would get many, many eggs each week in the marbles. I fed the fry golden pearls and microworms, very easy to raise. In my mind they are spawning all the time however they are very good at hunting down and eating eggs and fry. Good luck.
