I wonder if a piece of plexiglass cut to that size to replace your broken piece would not be a cheaper and more durable choice.

The integrity of it is lost. Silicone doesn't have significant holding strength so that wouldn't help. You could replace the piece of glass but you may find it costs as much as the whole cover.

Ummm..... I have an 85 gallon glass tank, and all that's keeping it together is silicone. So, I think silicone does have significant holding strength, besides, it's just a top, it doesn't need integrity, it's just keeping the water from evaporating.
