Craigslist Debacle

Great, bring on the euthanization debate! while we are at it how do you feel about glo-fish and a fishy cycle! almost forgot: WALMART :lipssealedsmilie:

ps. i wouldnt think twice bout flushing them, the clorine and temp change will kill them almost as fast as the half frozen water

Umm I wasn't trying to start any kind of debates or uproar, I was just upset and wanted to vent to people I thought would understand about the situation. I guess the lesson I learned is if something on CL (or in life) sounds too good to be true, it is. Taking those fish from him was alot of work for me. I just couldn't bear to leave them there. I had a hard time leaving his dog, cat, guinea pig, and rabbits behind although they were not offered, just because I want all things to live in a good home and be loved. Only like 4 fish were flushed all the rest are in big tanks at nice new homes. Sorry for doing the newbie rant thing.

you should've put them in the crayfish tank for some free food.

first of all welcome to ac! wasnt anything against you, just the people who want to attack you for flushing! you did what you thought was best at the time! :welcome:

As your crayfish gets bigger, there is a good chance it will eat your gourami. I have a crayfish and had to put her in her own tank... just to give you a heads up, you'll want to but the crayfish in a tank w/ no fish. Welcome to AC, sorry to hear about the misleading ad and the bad condition the fish were in... I agree w/ previous posters about a slower acclimation to new tank as well as better method of euthanizing, though good thing you saved some of them :)
Just a quick comment on this. I have a cray that I caught outside in the ditch when it had rained a lot. Apparently I have a midget cray, lol, because he doesn't seem to want to grow. I have some feeder guppies in there right now that he hasn't even touched, they pick up the extra food that falls around him. I guess it just depends on the cray...

In the future a more peaceful form of euthenasia is to place a bowl of water in the freezer till it ices over on top. Take it out and break a hole through the ice and place the poor fish in it. It is an almost instant death for tropicals. If I had seen that I don't know how I would have reacted. The ASPCA doesn't respond to fish abuse calls last I heard. What is so sad is that this fellow probably had no idea he was doing anything wrong. :(
See I was told to put it in a zip lock bag full of water and put it into the freezer.

You did the right thing by trying to save the best of the worst in such a sad situation. I am sure that next time(if there is a next time) you will think things through better when you have to euthanize fish.

i don't blame you for flushing the sickest ones. you've been in the hobby since december - you don't know any better. now you do! i mean, as bad as most of us here think flushing is, it really truly seems compassionate based on the description and visual image i get of this guy's tank. i mean honestly - any death from going into the toilet was probably more a result of shock from Old Tank Syndrome at that point. I'm glad you worked so hard to save the better fish and find them new homes.
