corona, ca
i looked in on my fish today and noticed my one schwartzi cory has a cloudy patch on the outside of one eye. its not swelling or anything like that. tried researching, but its not clear whether or not its the beginning of popeye or cloudy eye.

im quarantining him, but im not sure what i should use to treat him, since the two diseases recommend different treatments. is there anything general i can treat him with to prevent either/or?

I would be tempted to do large volume water changes and observe until you have a more definitive diagnosis. I shy away from treating blindly as it can cause more harm than good. The power of clean water should not be underestimated for vague symptoms.

but the water parameters in my tank are fine: 0ppm ammonia and nitrite. nitrates are 20 ppm, but thats how much nitrate is in my straight tapwater. should i do the water changes in the 10 gallon i have him isolated in?

wow, great pic! I am not sure what is wrong. I would be tempted to just watch and see for a day or so before jumping into meds. Hopefully someone else will see this and be able to id the illness and give you some suggestions on treatment.

yeah i think i will try the wait and see method. im just worried. i lost one cory to popeye a couple of months ago, but none of my other fish have shown any signs. i have some congo tetras and theyre kinda mouthy (cripes the nibble at my fingers if i have my hands are in the tank) so im wondering if he got nipped during the nightly feeding frenzy.

my camera has a feature where i can select the center of the frame to stay focused

If the tap nitrates are always that high you might try a resin like Chemipure or invest in reverse osmosis. Popeye is almost always caused by poor water & high nitrates.

i thought anything under 40 ppm was considered ok. as far as i could read, cories arent terribly sensitive to nitrates like some other kinds of fish
