You're ok with the nitrates at 20-40, just keep them under 40. Elevated nitrates will not cause popeye. It may just be a bump to his eye and lots of clean water will surely be good for that as immediate treatment. But if it gets any cloudier, I would treat him in the QT with something for bacterial infections like Maracyn 2.

i was looking at him this evening again. it was pretty icky this morning, but it does seem to have receded back to a crescent on the lower part of his eye. i will keep this in mind

his eye cleared up and hes been added back to the 55. he seems so HAPPY. hes been swimming around with the trilineatus its really cute. the trilineatus immediately swam over and "said hello" as soon as i dropped the schwartzi in. it was like they missed eachother

Glad it worked out. I hope my cory does the same, he has a similar white patch on his nose. Looks like he was white but got painted, and someone missed a spot.
