CrayFish Anyone?

yes i have a american crayfish in my 29 gallon with some other fish. he hasnt attacked any yet so I see no need to relocate him in a seperate tank. he is really cool to watch and is always climbing stuff. watch out for escapes, i found him crawling on the floor once.

sorry about not posting been one long weekend. i currently have about 20-25 crays. 2 brown and all blues. im not sure what species they are and i dont have a digital on hand to ask for some opinions. i house all my blues in a 30long and they seem to be happy. im constantly changing the setup of the tank. but i keep the pvc condo's ive built for them all pretty much the same. ive checked out bluecrayfish.com and he has some nice crays. i spoke to him via email and was pretty interested in his cray fish housing condo. just wondering on how to dicipher (need to spell check that one) the different species of blues i have. anyone have any suggestions? ive had two females for about 8 months who are as fertile as can be. all the boys like em. they're constantly in berry. as well as a brown female..... my first cray moult recently and turn blue. not cobalt blue or electric blue but a nice navy blue. i wish i would have recorded it. any comments or feedback would be great. im an avid crayfish lover as well as new world cichlid fan and would like to keep this thread going. thanks

The best way I know to id them is to post a pic for Bob or Appy on the bluecrayfish board. They can id faster than fast!

Other than that, try this.

Are they wild caught or store bought? (Location if wild caught can narrow down species)
How long/large are they and how long have you had them? (Most North American species get no bigger than 6 or 7 inches)
Do they have narrow heads and rostrums and prominent eyestalks? (This is usually indicative of Australian species)

Check out Crayfishworld.com He has tons of pics of different species posted.

I'd like to keep the thread going too!

I am not keeping any right now, but I ate 5 lbs of boiled crayfish on Saturday and they were great!!! At one crayfish boil I found a dark purple crayfish, I kept it in my aquarium for several months. Then, one week when I was out of town, it got out of the aquarium and dried up on the floor:(

if the fish is big enough and hungry... I've seen Oscar's eat crayfish, I'd imagine bigger catfish would, too.

unfortunately ive housed crays when i first became interested in them with ciclids and gouramies. i paid 30$ for a red tiger cray which is imported from asia she was a beauty. she moulted and became a snack for two small convicts and two red paradise gouramies. mind you she was like 6 inches easy. if the cray moults ... almost any fish will eat them ... its like like us having a lobster dinner. but like previously stated people do feed them to their larger fish. i personally wouldn't i like cray's brown blue whichever. but i feed my crays feeder guppies and golds so i guess im kinda contridicting myself. just food for though

the fish will probably only go after it once it molts, unless you got something like puffers. and they do attack fish my 15 inch arowana got magled by a common cray but the little guy became lunch a few days later.
