I recently got a 10 gl given to me and I have been cycling it and I have added ghost shrimp to it about a week ago. I would like to get a crawdad, maybe a blue or orange one. Sorry don't know any specific breeds yet. I want to set his home up now and give it a few weeks, then move him in. O and I don't plan to keep the shrimp in there I know he will eat them. My question is what kind of tube do I need to make him a home. I have heard just regular pvc pipe but what size do I need. Would there be something better than pvc.

Crayfish like any kind of shelter; a clay flowerpot or a real or fake rock 'cave' work well. PVC is fine, but I don't like the way it looks.

The size of the shelter will depend on the adult size of the crayfish variety you get; unfortunately pet stores often do not tell you what species of crayfish you are getting. Most North American species are under 6" in length and 2.5" in width, so a shelter large enough to accomodate that will be fine; red claws and other Australian crayfish ("yabbies") grow larger.

mine always eat snails. when i get a few to many thats were they go, escargo for the crays. they prefare tighter caves so you may want to start with a cave just big enough for him to fit in and then go bigger as it grows.

The blue crayfish that are usually availble are mutant forms of various species of Procambarus, including the Everglades Crayfish, P. alleni. They get at least a good 5" in length (not including claws).

Crayfish can eat snails; some individuals devour them as soon as they come across them, while others ignore them. Same with fish. Don't put any animal you're afraid to lose in with the crayfish.

Yeah I have read that they are pretty agressive eaters. Meaning that what some eat others don't touch. What about having a pleco in there with him, maybe a bushy nose, what do the pros think. I am just trying to get all my ducks in a row. I am going shoping for him this afternoon, not him exactly but all the stuff for him.

mine and other ppl have known small cray to attack plecs twice the size of them selves. the only fish i can keep with my crays are guppies.....they even sleep and hide in the same cave together, altho 1 or 2 might go now and then but they generaly leave them alone.
