would it be a good idea to put pieces of cuttle bone in my 60 gallon aquarium with my crayfish?

matt

yes i would like to know this as well... i'm wondering if its a good idea to put the cuttlebone in to raise the level of calcium in my tank

Seashells look prettier (boil first!), but yes, adding calcium to your tank will help your crayfish grow a healthier shell. Same thing goes for shrimp, crabs and other inverts with shells (snails, clams, etc.).

The shell/bone (well, since it's from a cuttlefish, cuttlebone really is more of a "shell" than a bone) will raise your ph/water hardness, so check your fish's compatibility for hard water. I would think in the overwhelming majority of cases the slight raise in ph/hardness would cause no effect on tankmates.

Cuttebone is a decent additive for calcium, but it might also have to be replaced from time to time due to sliminess, and be an eye sore to your tank. You could also use Iodine or Liquid Calcium from Kent Marine. Use it at half dose if you do get it. It was reccomended to me since I got cherry shrimp. It should be a good investment to the health of all your inverts.

I'm looking for something that i can just add to my HOB filter and have it slowly release calcium... i don't like the idea of using additives for every time you add water... i would like something that would be more long term

I see that graphicdesign r has a red claw crab...how is that working out? Have you had him long? I want to get a crab/crawfish..something cool like that for my 10 gallon with a yoyo loach, barb, small danio and algae eater but i want to make sure they can really survive submerged all the time...

Your loach and algae eater would be eaten by any crab, crayfish you put in there, they spend too much time on the bottom of the tank.
